Having just wrapped up my illustration class at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, I came away with LOTS of great ideas and a desire to keep up that momentum. One of the best things for me about the class was being forced to slow down and do exhaustive thumbnails and rough sketches for each project. It’s something that I find it hard to take the time to do with my limited art-making time, but I think the payoff was obvious in conceptually sound, better planned final pieces. An idea that came up during the class but that I didn’t have time to flesh out was the idea of creating illustrations (possibly for notecards) of the 12 Days of Christmas. And so, I bring you the first of twelve sketches that I hope to post daily between now and Christmas:
