While the beauty and diversity of birds is interesting in and of itself, there is also a long history of symbolism attributed to various species. The idea of birds as totems or messengers from the spirit world also interests me. I make the bird drawings first, and only later look up the specific totemic meaning of the species. The figures in these pieces are meant to be feminine archetypes rather than portraits or specific personalities. While I doubt that birds can really commune with “the other side,” the attributes we ascribe to them, reflecting our own human emotions and concerns, give us a more concrete way to let go, examine, and talk about what goes on inside of us. My own transformation as a person and an artist, and my evolving relationship with my child as she grows and changes are the subject of this body of work. On a daily basis I find myself in the midst of dolls, princess-themed toys, dress-up clothes, and other ephemera. I was not very interested in dolls as a child, so watching my daughter role-play with these toys has been fascinating. There is also something unsettling about finding abandoned, life-like, toys in random places around my house. In my work, dolls became a stand-in for my own ambivalent feelings toward mothering. Watching children play “pretend” is also fascinating–they role-play, try on different costumes, and, in their own minds, become something else entirely. Rather than try to record photographic details of a place, the work strives to capture instead an impression of a place and my emotional reaction to it. Whether I am alone with my thoughts or on a day out with my family; close to home or in a new place, I find that whatever is on my mind shapes how I look at the place I’m in and how I choose to see the details. The work is created with charcoal or conte, acrylic paint, and collage, and the layers are built up in a methodical but intuitive way. While I rely on photographic reference, the finished piece looks much more like the impression I carry with me in my mind from a place than a recognizable snapshot. This body of work grew out of a my BFA thesis exhibition.
