I’ve started messing around with the full-sized bird pieces, and have to admit I’m feeling a bit lost. There are so many illustrators I’ve been looking at lately who do an amazing job of integrating figure and ground, of pairing realistically (or at least convincingly) drawn birds with colorful, fanciful backgrounds, and I’m just not there yet. I’m hoping that taking this illustration class will really help me refine my style. I’m getting to know the birds well, and how to draw them, so now the challenge is to put them in some sort of context that works.

After critique last night, I decided that maybe the three bird composition was not working on this piece. I now have one little wren, lost amongst a riot of color. I still have a lot more work to do.

And on this background, I’ve decided to go with one, large central figure. A Northern Flicker.

I wish I could find three solid hours at home to just draw, like I have been on the days when I visit the museum.
